Impact on Human Health & Ethical Issues
After
the Lasik procedure, the eyes may feel irritating or itchy and sometimes they
may feel as if they are burning which will cause them to become watery. Due to
having frequent tears in the eyes, the vision becomes blurry. Additional procedure
could be a possibility if the eyes get continuously rubbed which could affect
the corneal flap. It could be shifted or dislocated and to reposition it, an
additional procedure may be required. Often there would be discomfort and pain
in which the doctor would provide pain killers but there would still be many
symptoms. Light sensitivity, hazy vision, along with reddened eyes are the most
common symptoms after the procedure and if your condition gets worsened then
you should contact your doctor as soon as possible without wasting any time.
Your vision could be blurry for a couple of days after the surgery, but during
your first postoperative visit, the doctor would recommend you to continue
using antibiotics, fake tears after examining your eyes. Doctors may also
recommend taking rest and not participate in sports for a few days or sometimes
weeks depending on your recovery. Pools, and lakes will be advised to keep a
distance from as eye infection could occur, rest your doctor will let you know
when you could start participating in your regular activities.
It is recommended that
do not apply any sort of makeup, creams or perfumes as they could also risk for
an infection, but again your doctor will let you know when to use them. Your vision
could change various times during the first few months after the surgery but
your vision should be stabilized by two weeks. You may face hardships in
driving at night, and having a glare but that will also be part of the process
of your vision’s stabilization. If you are facing problems with your vision
then immediately visit your doctor in order to get a checkup; vision loss could
be the result. Additional treatments may be applied but before any further
steps, you should have your eye measurements done to know whether your vision
would improve with the enhancement. Risks still apply in the initial surgery
and there are no guarantees of a positive result.
There
is not always a positive result after the surgery since the possible outcomes
may be vision delusion, the results may not be permanent for a life time. After
the surgery glasses or contacts might be still needed and more overly vision
loss is one of the biggest risks. Lasik could also make your vision worse
during the night and it could make the dry eye symptoms worse. Along with the
negative results, there are some positive points as well. The procedure of
Lasik is pretty fast and is approximately 10-15 minutes and painless. Since the
computer guides the laser, the results are precise and accurate.
Some ethical issues that apply in the Lasik surgery are confidence. Many patients
don’t have much confidence in the procedure because of the disadvantages,
negative results and side effects. People often continue to wear contacts or
lenses because they fear that their eye sight may worsen or may result in a
vision loss. Along with confidence, fear is also there. Fear that the process
may not guarantee a life-time without glasses and lenses and fear of having the
worst symptoms which may last over a long period of time. Many fear of vision
loss or vision blur and some fear the actual process in which a blade is used. Visual
aberrations such as having each eye visualizing two different sizes and or the
increased sensitivity of light towards the eyes are another fear.
